As she released a breath, I inhaled. That was when it hit me. She was human. What was Blake doing with a pretty human?

“You dare to step foot among vampires?” I asked. My fangs dropped.

A car horn blew, breaking the electricity between us.

“Get in the car, Blake.” She shoved him toward the vehicle before stopping in front of me. “Are you trying to scare me?” She poked her finger into my chest.

Webb grabbed her arm while Dad slid his arm between the brunette and me.

“You don’t scare me either,” she said, shrugging off Webb’s hand. “I’ve been around your kind for far too long.” She bumped my shoulder and pushed Dad out of her way. She stopped at the car door and turned. “Watch your back, Jo.” Then both her and Blake jumped in the backseat.

“What was that all about?” Sam asked as the car sped down the driveway.

“Webb, find out who she is, and the boy,” Dad commanded.

I blew out a breath. How did she know my name?

Ms. Lawrence and Mr. Banks came running down the steps.

“What’s going on here?” Mr. Banks asked, grabbing his phone. Before he pushed any buttons, three Guardians stalked down the steps.

“Okay, students, it’s over,” Ms. Lawrence said. “Steven, a word, please?” She motioned to an area down the sidewalk away from the crowd.

Webb and Sam both said, “Are you okay?”

Both had a grin from ear to ear. Both made my heart melt for different reasons. The sister in me was proud of my brother, and the female in me wanted to run and jump into Webb’s arms. I wanted to feel his touch again as I had before.

“Jo, are you hurt?” Sam asked.

Now that he mentioned it, warm liquid seeped down the back of my shirt. I placed my hand at the base of my neck to find it was in fact blood.

Webb grasped my hand.
